Uganda’s smallest yet most scenic park—Mgahinga Gorilla National Park offers intimate gorilla trekking, golden monkey encounters, and breathtaking volcano landscapes in the Virunga Mountains.
Nestled in the southwestern corner of Uganda, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is a hidden gem within the greater Virunga Conservation Area, shared with Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Though compact in size, this park delivers one of the most unique and exclusive primate safari experiences in East Africa.
Dominated by three extinct volcanoes—Mount Muhabura, Mount Gahinga, and Mount Sabyinyo—Mgahinga boasts dramatic scenery, dense bamboo forests, and Afro-montane vegetation that create a mystical atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Uganda.
The park is home to the Nyakagezi gorilla family, known for its stability and relatively easier tracking compared to other gorilla groups. This makes Mgahinga ideal for travelers seeking a more intimate and less crowded gorilla trekking experience compared to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.
Beyond gorillas, Mgahinga is the only place in Uganda where you can track the endangered golden monkeys, offering a rare and playful primate encounter. Cultural experiences with the indigenous Batwa people further enrich visits, providing deep insight into the forest’s original inhabitants.
For travelers looking for exclusivity, stunning landscapes, and a blend of wildlife and culture, Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is an unforgettable destination.
