About This Destination

Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most accessible and rewarding wildlife destinations, located in the western region near Mbarara. Despite being the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks, it boasts an impressive diversity of habitats including open grasslands, acacia woodland, wetlands, and five lakes that support a rich ecosystem.

The park is especially famous for its large populations of plains zebras, impalas, elands, and Rothschild’s giraffes, making it one of the best places in Uganda to view these species up close. Unlike many other parks in the country, Lake Mburo offers guided walking safaris, horseback safaris, and cycling experiences, giving visitors a rare chance to explore wildlife on foot.

Lake Mburo itself is the centerpiece of the park, where boat cruises reveal hippos, crocodiles, and an abundance of waterbirds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons. With over 350 bird species recorded, it is a prime destination for birding enthusiasts.

Its proximity to Kampala and Entebbe makes it an ideal stopover for travelers heading to or from southwestern Uganda, including gorilla trekking safaris.
