A compact yet diverse savannah park near Kampala, Lake Mburo National Park offers unique walking safaris, rich birdlife, and sightings of zebras, giraffes, and antelopes in a peaceful, scenic setting.
Lake Mburo National Park is one of Uganda’s most accessible and rewarding wildlife destinations, located in the western region near Mbarara. Despite being the smallest of Uganda’s savannah parks, it boasts an impressive diversity of habitats including open grasslands, acacia woodland, wetlands, and five lakes that support a rich ecosystem.
The park is especially famous for its large populations of plains zebras, impalas, elands, and Rothschild’s giraffes, making it one of the best places in Uganda to view these species up close. Unlike many other parks in the country, Lake Mburo offers guided walking safaris, horseback safaris, and cycling experiences, giving visitors a rare chance to explore wildlife on foot.
Lake Mburo itself is the centerpiece of the park, where boat cruises reveal hippos, crocodiles, and an abundance of waterbirds including African fish eagles, kingfishers, and herons. With over 350 bird species recorded, it is a prime destination for birding enthusiasts.
Its proximity to Kampala and Entebbe makes it an ideal stopover for travelers heading to or from southwestern Uganda, including gorilla trekking safaris.
Lake Mburo National Park is approximately a 4–5 hour drive (about 240 km) from Entebbe International Airport or Kampala via the Kampala–Masaka–Mbarara highway. The journey offers scenic countryside views and a popular stop at the equator crossing in Kayabwe.
For faster access, domestic charter flights are available from Entebbe International Airport to nearby airstrips such as Mbarara or Kisoro, followed by a short road transfer to the park.
Lake Mburo National Park offers a range of accommodation options to suit different budgets and preferences. Luxury travelers can enjoy exclusive stays at Mihingo Lodge, known for its eco-friendly design and panoramic views. Mid-range options such as Rwakobo Rock Lodge and Arcadia Cottages provide comfort and excellent access to wildlife areas. Budget travelers can choose from basic safari lodges, bandas, and campsites within and around the park. Most lodges offer guided activities including game drives, boat trips, and walking safaris.
