A remote rainforest park in western Uganda, Semuliki offers a true jungle experience with rare Central African wildlife, hot springs, rich birdlife, and peaceful nature-based exploration.
Semuliki National Park is one of Uganda’s most distinctive safari destinations, located in the Albertine Rift Valley along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Unlike Uganda’s typical savannah parks, Semuliki features lowland tropical rainforest that forms part of the vast Congo Basin ecosystem. The park is especially known for its exceptional birdlife, with over 440 recorded species, many of which are found only in Central Africa. It is also home to a variety of primates and forest mammals, though wildlife sightings are more subtle compared to open savannah parks. One of the park’s main attractions is the Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling geysers emerge from the forest floor offering both a natural spectacle and cultural significance to local communities. Semuliki is ideal for travelers looking for a quiet, off-the-grid experience focused on nature walks, birdwatching, and cultural encounters rather than traditional game drives.
Semuliki National Park is accessed via Fort Portal in western Uganda. The drive from Entebbe or Kampala takes about 6–7 hours (approximately 360 km) via Mubende and Fort Portal. Roads are generally good, though the final approach to the park can be rough.
Chartered domestic flights can be arranged to nearby airstrips such as Semuliki or Kasese, followed by a short transfer by road to the park.
Accommodation options near Semuliki National Park include mid-range lodges, eco-lodges, and budget campsites. Many lodges are located near Sempaya Gate or in the Fort Portal area, offering views of the Rwenzori Mountains. Visitors can choose between simple nature-focused stays or more comfortable lodge experiences.
