Home to the legendary “Mountains of the Moon,” Rwenzori offers dramatic alpine scenery, glacier peaks, challenging hikes, and unique Afro-alpine vegetation in western Uganda.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located in western Uganda along the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The park protects the Rwenzori mountain range often called the “Mountains of the Moon” known for its rugged peaks, glaciers, waterfalls, and rare vegetation zones. Unlike typical safari parks, Rwenzori is a trekking and mountaineering destination. The range includes Mount Stanley, which features Margherita Peak (5,109 meters), the third-highest mountain in Africa. The park is famous for its unique Afro-alpine landscapes, including giant lobelias, heathers, and moss-covered forests. It offers an adventurous experience for hikers, from short nature walks to multi-day expeditions to the summit. Rwenzori is ideal for travelers seeking physical challenge, dramatic scenery, and a quieter alternative to traditional wildlife safaris.
Rwenzori Mountains National Park is accessed via Kasese in western Uganda. By road, the journey from Entebbe or Kampala takes about 6–7 hours (approximately 400 km) via Fort Portal or Mbarara. Scheduled or charter domestic flights are available from Entebbe to Kasese Airstrip, followed by a short drive to the park’s trailheads such as Nyakalengija.
Accommodation ranges from basic mountain huts along trekking routes to lodges in Kasese and the surrounding areas. Climbers typically stay in designated huts during multi-day treks, while non-climbers can choose from mid-range lodges and guesthouses near the park.
