Uganda’s only destination for tracking white rhinos in the wild
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, located in Nakasongola District, central Uganda, spans 70 square kilometers and is the only place in Uganda where visitors can see white rhinos in their natural habitat. Established in 2005, it is a conservation success story aimed at reintroducing rhinos to Uganda.
The sanctuary is home to over 30 southern white rhinos, alongside other wildlife such as leopards, hippos, and over 300 bird species. Its savanna grasslands, wetlands, and woodlands provide a diverse ecosystem for conservation and eco-tourism.
Ziwa’s close proximity to Murchison Falls National Park makes it an ideal stop for travelers seeking a unique wildlife experience, with guided rhino tracking as the main attraction.
Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary offers an unparalleled opportunity to track southern white rhinos on foot, guided by expert rangers. The sanctuary’s conservation efforts have grown its rhino population from 6 in 2005 to over 30 today, making it a critical site for rhino reintroduction in Uganda.
Beyond rhinos, the sanctuary hosts a variety of wildlife, including antelopes, monkeys, and over 300 bird species like the shoebill stork. Visitors can also enjoy boat trips on the Lugogo Swamp to spot crocodiles and waterbirds.
Rhino tracking is the centerpiece of a visit to Ziwa. The experience begins with a morning or afternoon briefing at the sanctuary’s headquarters, followed by a guided walk in small groups of up to 8 people. Treks typically last 1.5 to 2 hours, depending on the rhinos’ location.
Once located, visitors spend up to one hour observing the rhinos from a safe distance, learning about their behavior and conservation efforts. The open terrain allows for excellent viewing and photography opportunities.
