Overview

Semuliki National Park, located in western Uganda, is a unique lowland rainforest covering 220 square kilometers. Situated in the Albertine Rift Valley, it is an extension of the vast Ituri Forest of the Congo Basin.

The park is famous for its Sempaya Hot Springs, a natural geothermal feature, and its incredible biodiversity, including 441 bird species (66% of Uganda’s total) and 53 mammal species. It is a top destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts.

Semuliki’s flat terrain and tropical climate support a variety of primates, including chimpanzees, and unique forest species like the water chevrotain, making it a hidden gem for eco-tourism.

The Ultimate Rainforest Experience

Semuliki National Park offers an immersive rainforest experience, with its dense forests, hot springs, and rich biodiversity. The park is a birdwatcher’s paradise, hosting 441 species, including 35 found nowhere else in East Africa.

Visitors can explore the Sempaya Hot Springs, where boiling water and steam create a mystical atmosphere. The park also supports 9 primate species, including chimpanzees and red colobus, and offers guided nature walks to discover its unique flora and fauna.

Hot Springs and Bird Watching

The Sempaya Hot Springs are a highlight, with guided walks to the male and female springs, where visitors can witness geothermal activity and even boil eggs in the water. Walks last 1-2 hours.

Bird watching tours target species like the Congo serpent eagle and black-throated coucal. Guided by experts, these tours explore forest trails and swamps, lasting 2-4 hours depending on sightings.

Morning briefing at park headquarters. Bring water, insect repellent, and sturdy boots. Guides provided.

Walks last 1-4 hours on forest trails. Terrain may be muddy. Groups of 8 max, led by experts.
